Child-Friendly ADCT Questionnaire

Known as “ADCToon,” this tool comprises a set of illustrated diagnostic cards that simplify the ADCT (Atopic Dermatitis Control Tool) questionnaire, helping address the difficulty children often have with empirical questions. The project included extensive user research across five major hospitals in Israel, engaging both medical experts and young patients. Through a visual diagnostic approach, ADCToon enables children to communicate their experiences directly, without the need for parental mediation, resulting in clearer diagnoses and ultimately improving the quality of care they receive. I managed the development of this project in collaboration with Sanofi and the Graduate Hamama Group at Bezalel. ADCToon received first place in the Play to Win Medical Award in the Act for Patients & Customers category, standing out among 171 projects from 27 countries for its innovative approach in advancing user-centered healthcare design.

The project was guided by design thinking principles to foster empathy between healthcare providers and children suffering from atopic dermatitis. Leading a team of designers, we worked closely with Sanofi’s innovation, marketing, and client teams. Through research and field observations, we identified the need for a direct line of communication between doctors and young patients. Given our team's background in design, we recognized that addressing the unique challenges faced by young patients was an area where we could make the greatest impact for both Sanofi and the children. Our multi-phase process involved extensive user testing intervals, enabling us to refine the design to fit the Israeli target audience while establishing a protocol adaptable to various cultural and geographic regions. I managed the development process from pain-point identification and value proposition ideation to execution and market launch of the final product.

Using an iterative testing approach, we conducted multiple feedback rounds with children, parents, and dermatology specialists across various hospitals. Through MIRO boards, we mapped pain points and identified potential intervention areas, creating a visualization of the diagnostic process as it unfolds in real settings. We illustrated and prototyped quick scene sketches to help children identify with their condition and communicate directly with doctors. Each iteration provided valuable insights, allowing for rapid adjustments to better address the needs of young patients, enhancing the product’s effectiveness as a communication tool.

Our 2D design expertise enabled us, as a team of designers, to craft detailed, effective communication between doctors and children. To support this, we developed a structured series of design principles, where each question in the ADCT questionnaire examines a unique aspect of the child’s emotional state, contributing to a comprehensive medical assessment. For each question, a sequence of four cards was created, illustrating a childlike character within progressive scenes that shift from light to dark tones, reflecting a range of emotional intensities. Each set is color-coded to differentiate between topics, and the fan-shaped layout allows for easy opening and closing. This structure enables doctors to quickly gauge the child’s status through simple, intuitive interaction, providing immediate insight into their emotional state.
